Kathy Poole was the landscape architect on the project as well as the leader of a team composed of urbanists, architects, and engineers who developed a New Urbanist, mixed use development for the 386-acre property. The development plan balanced the needs of shareholders and ecological preservation by first completing an ecological assessment and developing program that did not exceed the carrying capacity of the land. The project also balanced extremely complex topographic and public infrastructure constraints toward a project that will be a landmark addition to the city—a town center that embraces a lovely lake complemented by housing tucked into its wooded slopes. Located a mile from the University of Alabama, the project also accommodates student housing and is positioned to become a transit oriented development in future phases. The plan is supported by a Design Based Code for its implementation.
