THE COTTAGES AT GREENWOOD • Howard County, Maryland

The Cottages at Greenwood will set a new benchmark in community design for Howard County and the nation: A community that is sustainable, affordable, and universally accessible far beyond the norm. First, the 10 one-story single family cottages have been designed to accommodate residents of all physical abilities and to age in place gracefully. Second, from building orientation to floor finishes, the design incorporates the most efficient and effective green technologies and practices, saving residents on energy bills and sustaining the County's environmental quality and investment of public funds. And finally, visitors and residents alike will see the community as "charming" rather than "affordable housing": Lovely architecture, exceptionally detailed, using quality materials; a lane of homes that culminates in a court; and street trees framing generously planted front and side gardens. POOLE DESIGN and Vogel Engineering collaborated to devise a site plan that met all County standards and allowed the project to meet its ambitious goals as well as stormwater rain gardens that contribute to the site's planting abundance and sustainable, high performance infrastructure. POOLE DESIGN's efforts included a patio and garden design that doubles as an "outdoor living room," thus extending the homes' sizes significantly. And in support of the project's universal living goals, the site's plantings include only anti-allergenic species.
